Book Overview

Whenever we are in conversation with people in rural communities about the challenges, they face the topic of water comes up repeatedly and they look to Tarayana to help them. A solution to the water problem can also resolve other problems associated with agriculture and sanitation. The primary concern with water sources in many parts of the country is that they are drying up. Right now, local people are expecting others to solve the problem of drying water resources by providing financial assistance to purchase water pipes and construct larger water reservoirs. We discussed springshed management work in great depth and explained that the main issue to be addressed is the drying up of water sources; we informed them that physical fencing interventions will not safeguard water sources from drying up. Springshed method involves recharging aquifers to replenish drying water sources and increase discharge even during lean season. After gaining an understanding of springshed, they shifted their focus from seeking fencing materials to protecting water sources from further drying out. Additionally, they told us that communities might be able to purchase materials, such as water pipes, and build water tanks with their own funds, provided that water sources are safeguarded from drying out. The springshed management involves the mapping of recharge areas, and the reviving of water sources that have dried out. Therefore, this book serves as a guide for the mapping and reviving of the drying water sources throughout Bhutan. We hope this book will be helpful to everyone!
